Learning from the Best

Anna Detoro knows where she wants her career path to lead.

The junior at Kent State University is working toward a bachelor’s degree in applied horticulture, with a concentration in urban forestry, while she's interning at the Davey Institute. At Davey, she works in the Plant and Soil Laboratories with some of Davey Tree's top scientists diagnosing diseases, pests and other natural elements harmful to plant life.

"At Davey, I work with the best tree professionals in the world, so I was nervous about working at such a huge and prestigious company," Detoro said. "Luckily, I work with very reasonable and incredible educators at Davey. Every day is like being in class at the Davey Institute. I gain knowledge every moment I'm there and I’m thankful for such a wonderful opportunity."

Pursue An Internship With Davey

Frequently asked questions about Davey internships.

Q: What are Davey internships like and will they meet the experience I need as a requirement for graduation?

A: Our internships are competitive. We offer full-time paid positions and employment periods to fit your program.

Q: Do you provide housing for interns?

A: Typically, we do not provide housing. Our national presence gives us the flexibility to place interns close to home or near a family member, so housing hasn’t always been a concern. However, some of our locations are beginning to offer housing assistance where necessary.

Q: Do you offer scholarships?

A: Yes, we do. In fact, in 2014, more than 40 students from colleges and universities across the U.S. received Davey Arbor Grant Scholarships from the Davey Foundation. All winners receive a $1,000 grant they can apply toward their education in horticultural or arboricultural fields. Applicants for the scholarship must be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program at a selected technical school, college or university, must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher, and must submit recommendations from their instructor or professor. Q: What do I need to do to apply for an internship?

A: Contact a Davey recruiter. Our internships involve job applications, as well as drug screenings and background checks.

Q: What are Davey internships like?

A: We have modules for our internships that dictate the direction of the program. We introduce students to training and direct work participation in the areas of tree surgery, pest management, tree fertilization, lawn care, sales and customer service, along with exposure to support services of scheduling, routing and client billing/records. Modules vary in length based on students’ needs and proficiencies.

Interns are guided through the experience through their superior, who is responsible for progressively scheduling the student through these modules with different coaches, as well as ensuring the intern receives the basic job duties and safety training necessary to perform and understand the working dimensions of each area.

At the conclusion of the internship, we provide our own intern evaluations, as well as those required by the institutes of higher learning.
