Position Overview

The Fiber Drop Designer is a hybrid role, working both in the field (Norther/Western Michigan) and in design, responsible for managing all aspects of fiber drop design from initial field data collection through final design submission. This position ensures accurate, efficient, and constructible fiber drop routes whether aerial, underground, or a combination of both.

 

Valid Driver's License is Required 

 

Key responsibilities include:

 

  • Field Data Collection: Utilize AppSuite/Compass and Axin software to document existing aerial and underground equipment, identify future fiber trunk line and RTD locations, and capture GPS data points for drop routes.

  • Drop Route Planning: Determine drop paths from RTD to member homes, selecting aerial, underground, or hybrid methods. Collect and trace equipment data to create accurate drop routes.

  • Final Field Actions: Flag routes, identify NID placement, assess tree work needs, determine plowing vs. boring requirements, and evaluate permitting considerations.

  • Job Processing: Use iVue Connect/Staking and AppSuite/Compass to process equipment assemblies, generate labeled maps, and send finalized work to financial systems and construction vaults. Ensure all permitting documentation is completed for drop installation.

 

This role combines technical fieldwork with design expertise to deliver reliable, high-quality fiber connectivity to customers.

Job Duties

What You Will Do 
Responsibilities:

•    Utilize software platforms to analyze and interpret field data.
•    Record existing telecommunication and electric utility infrastructure.
•    Identify and document safety risks and hazards.
•    Apply engineering principles to design aerial and underground utility facilities.
•    Transfer designs to other software platforms.
•    Collaborate to propose infrastructure design solutions.
•    Ensure equipment maintenance and report issues promptly.
•    Travel occasionally (50%) for on-site job duties, projects, or meetings.

Qualifications

Required:
•    High school diploma or equivalent.
•    Willingness to obtain and maintain professional certificates and licenses as required.
•    Proficiency in basic office applications and data entry; willingness to learn utility design software.
•    Ability to read, comprehend, and draft professional correspondence.
•    Effective communication skills in both one-on-one and group settings.
•    Basic arithmetic proficiency.
•    Ability to follow detailed instructions, solve problems, and address varied situations.

Preferred:
•    Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in engineering or related technical field.
•    Prior experience in the electric utility or telecommunications industry.
•    Knowledge of electric hazard identification, equipment identification, or communication equipment.
•    Familiarity with Outside Plant Engineering design and pole loading analysis software.
