Position Overview

The Hybrid Utility Designer 2 is responsible for planning, designing, verifying locations, inspecting, or otherwise capturing information related to utility and telecommunication assets. This junior-level role involves learning and applying technical skills under supervision, using routine procedures to address common challenges. Approximately 20% of the role will require field work in Central and Southern Ohio, with the remaining design work as remote. A company vehicle or travel reimbursement will be provided.

Job Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Organize assigned proposals using client software
  • Communicate with homeowners/customers in the AES footprint to schedule on-site meetings and determine the scope of work
  • Maintain records of utility infrastructure.
  • Identify and mitigate safety risks.
  • Design aerial and underground utilities, ensuring compliance with AES engineering standards 
  • Optimize designs for cost-effectiveness and safety.
  • Design engineering prints and cost estimates using client provided software
  • Manage permitting processes.
  • Correct database errors.
  • Collaborate with project stakeholders for optimal design solutions.
  • Maintain vehicle and equipment, ensuring operational readiness.
  • Manage document systems effectively.
  • Respond to emergencies safely and promptly.
  • Report to supervisors accurately and promptly.
  • Participate in training events at the AES building in Dayton, OH.
  • Travel occasionally for on-site duties (1-3 days a week depending on workload).
  • Perform other assigned duties and adhere to company policies.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 2-4 years prior electric utility experience, preferably in low voltage distribution.
  • High-school diploma with electric utility or telecommunications industry experience OR a Bachelor's degree in engineering (or related technical field) with no prior industry experience.
  • Obtain and maintain professional certificates and licenses commensurate with project requirements.
  • Ability to read, understand and apply engineering construction standards to design projects.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in CAD/Outside Plant Engineering design software, PLA software, Microsoft Office applications, Google Workspace, and data entry.
  • Strong communication skills including written and verbal. Read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos.
  • Perform basic arithmetic computations.
  • Apply understanding to carry out detailed instructions. Identify, address, and resolve problems involving multiple variables and varied situations.
  • State-issued driver's license and a personal vehicle for on-site travel.
  • Residence in Southwest or Central Ohio (Cinncinatti, Dayton, Columbus). Must live within a 45-minute drive of Dayton, OH.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field from an accredited college or university.
  • Relevant distribution design experience.
  • Electric hazard identification, electric equipment identification, or communication equipment identification capability.
