Position Overview

Summary:  The Telecommunications Removal Technician is responsible for maintaining and improving telecommunications infrastructure by identifying and removing non-functional overhead wires  while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding infrastructure. This role involves accessing overhead telecommunications cables using ladders, operating specialized equipment to identify obsolete cables, and performing maintenance on telecommunications equipment as needed. This role supports the expansion and maintenance of telecommunications networks. This position is an individual contributor role, working in a field environment.

Job Classification: The Telecommunications Removal Technician is a non-exempt position. The job level is IC-1.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position is an individual contributor role and does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Job Duties

Duties and Responsibilities:
●    Operate telecommunications testing equipment to identify and remove non-functioning overhead telecommunications wires.
●    Safely use ladders to access telecommunication wires attached to utility poles, ensuring compliance with safety standards and protocols during all climbing activities.
●    Locate and troubleshoot telecommunication cables and wires to diagnose and resolve issues affecting service.
●    Utilize technology, such as iPads, cameras, and GIS software, for accurate data collection and field documentation.
●    Set up and clean up job sites, ensuring equipment is loaded, secured, transported, and unloaded safely.
●    Conduct regular equipment inspections and ensure all construction equipment is used safely in diverse environments (urban and rural).
●    Set up safe work zones, including DOT-compliant traffic zones, to ensure the safety of crew members and the public.
●    Professionally interact with landowners to ensure clear communication and understanding of site activities.
●    Conduct oneself professionally in public settings while representing Davey Resource Group.
●    Ensure the proper care and maintenance of any vehicle and equipment assigned including regular inspections, maintenance checks, and prompt reporting of any issues to the appropriate supervisor or maintenance personnel.
●    React safely and appropriately in emergency situations.
●    Report and respond timely and accurately to the supervisor.
●    Participate in employee and professional training events as assigned.
●    Travel (100%) for on-site job duty training, projects, or meetings.
●    Perform other related duties as assigned.
●    Follow all company policies, procedures, and work rules.
 

Qualifications

Experience and Qualifications:
●    Required: Previous experience in performing manual labor outdoors.
●    Required: Valid driver’s license along with a clean Motor Vehicle Report. Must pass the Davey Driver’s Safety Course 
●    Required: Must be comfortable maneuvering, carrying and using ladders to climb utility poles and working at heights of 20 plus feet.
●    Required: Effectively and clearly communicate in a one-on-one or group setting. 
●    Required: Demonstrated ability to accurately and efficiently follow detailed instructions while operating safely. 
●    Required:  Must be willing to obtain and maintain professional certificates and licenses commensurate with project requirements.
●    Required: Ability to use electronic devices and technological tools in the field, including iPads, cameras, and GIS software. Ability to use maps and navigation tools.
●    Preferred: High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
●    Preferred:  Electric hazard identification, electric equipment identification, or communication equipment identification capability.
●    Preferred: OSHA 1910.268 qualified training is preferred but will be provided as required by the project. 
●    Preferred: Previous experience with telecommunications installations.

 

Physical Requirements:
●    Ability to perform strenuous manual labor for extended periods, including standing, reaching, and moving items weighing up to 50 pounds, with the potential for heavier loads when working with multiple people.
●    Must be able to easily bend, reach, hold, and grasp.
●    Must meet the weight capacity requirements for the equipment used on the job (e.g., ladders, harnesses, and safety gear) as specified by manufacturer guidelines and safety regulations.
●    Must be able to use a ladder to climb a utility pole and work at heights of 20 plus feet.
●    Observe and respond to visual messages.  
●    Observe and respond to instructions, messages, and other oral communication. 
●    Walk and carry equipment for distances up to a mile or more.

 

Working Conditions:
●    Exposure to various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind.
●    Working in diverse environments such as roadways, fields, forests, remote, or urban areas.
●    Exposure to a variety of vegetation, animals, and insects.
●    Perform work in the presence of distractions and in public areas.
●    Time spent riding in and or driving vehicles.
●    Standing, walking, and working on uneven terrain for extended periods.
●    Working in noisy and potentially hazardous environments, requiring adherence to safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
●    Performing tasks that require working with both hands at heights over 20 feet.
●    Exposure to a variety of people, communities, and traffic conditions.
●    Exposure to dust, dirt, and other environmental elements.
●    Risk of electrical shock. 
●    Long hours and occasional weekend work, depending on project demands.
