Position Overview

The Natural Resource Specialist performs work in support of the Davey Institute’s Ecosystem Services Team in collaboration with the US Forest Service’s i-Tree Team. The Davey Institute serves all of Davey’s North American operations with a scientific commitment to our horticultural and environmental services. The Ecosystem Services team is a multidisciplinary (and multi-site) group of researchers, developers, programmers, and specialists. Specifically, the Ecosystem Services Team creates, supports, and disseminates models, tools and concepts to advance the assessment and improved stewardship of urban natural resources. This Team works in close collaboration with US Forest Service to provide for the on-going support and continuous development of the i-Tree Suite of Tools (www.itreetools.org). The Natural Resource Specialist reports to the Ecosystem Services Manager at the Davey Institute and will work with a broad network of Forest Service and Davey Institute staff in support of their customers and constituents.

 

Job Duties

Develop and promote science delivery programs to help regional and national audiences understand and apply research findings and technology transfer solutions (e.g. the i-Tree Tools). Activities may include:

  • Writing and layout of research summaries, highlight and other science delivery products.
  • Updating the i-Tree website to present the latest research findings and their applications to the public
  • Engaging new audiences and communities interested in monitoring and managing their natural resources.
  • Develop and contribute to novel methods of technology transfer to reach diverse audiences including in-person events, online workshops, social media outreach, and authoring new training materials.
  • Traveling locally, regionally, and nationally to conduct or attend workshops, conferences, meetings, or assist with committee assignments.
  • Exploring opportunities and developing projects, technologies and programs to promote and advance the missions of the Davey Institute and the i-Tree program

Create, support, and disseminate models, tools and concepts to advance the assessment and improved stewardship of urban natural resources. Activities may include:

  • Providing technical support for i-Tree software users
  • Acting as a liaison between i-Tree users, software developers, analyst, researchers, and managers
  • Performing applications testing and providing feedback.
  • Developing support documents, training materials and website content
  • Providing in-person and online training for staff and clients on applying assessment tools and technologies
  • Support and participation in original research projects including project development, implementation, management, analysis, and report writings.

Qualifications

Education and Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in, or significant course work towards, the completion of a degree in Natural Resource Management, Urban Forestry, Horticulture, Geography, Arboriculture or related field.
  2. Must have exceptional oral and written communication skills and feel comfortable communicating and teaching science and technical tools to a broad audience.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of urban forest assessment concepts, methods and tools such as the i-Tree software suite is highly desirable.
  4. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; familiarity with software applications used in natural resources management such as ESRI ArcGIS and in creating online content is desirable.
  5. Experience with content management, and online learning management systems.
  6. Familiarity with basic natural resource inventory techniques and measurement tools including the calculation of general sampling statistics.
