Position Overview

The Vegetation Management Rail Intern will gain meaningful experience to compliment the academic experience at a college or university.  They will learn how to provide our rail clients with the services and solutions needed to efficiently and effectively manage trees and vegetation along railroad right-of-ways and facilities by performing the following duties.

Hours:

40-50 hours per week, Monday-Friday with some Saturdays required. 

Job Duties

What you’ll do:  Manage vegetation near or along railroads by performing the following duties:

  • Work safely and independently in the outdoors under a wide range of conditions and weather types
  • Inspect trees and vegetation around railroads and identify common defects and hazardous conditions
  • Understand and apply a variety of regulations and compliance standards
  • Identify local tree species, weeds, or other vegetation, and recognize common diseases and pests
  • Learn financial aspects of operating tree trimming and pruning crews for right-of-way maintenance and management
  • Apply pesticides to control vegetation under the supervision of a certified applicator

Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

  • Must have enthusiasm for the green and growing world
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn
  • Demonstrated ability to report for work regularly and punctually
  • Collaboration and communication skills

 

Qualifications:

  • Studying Arboriculture, Urban Forestry, Horticulture, Landscape Design, Forestry or related discipline in a 2 or 4-year program
  • Driver’s license required. Commercial driver’s license highly valuable.   
  • Pesticide/applicators License preferred
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening

  • eRailSafe – required safety and security credentials for working with Davey’s largest client, Canadian Pacific Railroad.
  • Roadway Worker Protection (RWP) training, also called On-Track Safety – required safety training in compliance with federal regulations to prevent accidents and injuries to employees and contractors caused by moving railroad cars, locomotives, or roadway maintenance machines striking roadway workers or roadway maintenance machines.  
  • State pesticide applicators license

After successful completed of the Davey Rail Internship program, there is potential for opportunities for full time employment, along with potential opportunities in our accelerated management development track program.
