Position Overview
The Davey Company has a strategic initiative to increase our expertise, sales, and value to clients in the water management marketplace. Beyond irrigation maintenance and repair, water management optimizes the interaction of plants, soils, and water to save money and water for clients through this holistic approach. Davey aspires to be a leader in this market space.
Significant work has been done with a focused water management team (WMT) housed within the Davey Institute. Utilizing both in-house personnel and expert outsourced consulting, a vision, and suite of water management services have been established and deployed in various projects and with current Davey clients.
Further developing and integrating water management services requires a new member of the WMT with excellent working knowledge of irrigation/water management principles, as well as a deep understanding of horticultural principles. The marketplace for the WMT is primarily focused on Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, and Texas. Solidifying the WMT’s work in these states and traveling regionally or nationally to expand our footprint will be required.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform the landscape irrigation audit process on assigned projects.
- Support WMT projects and initiatives and be available for on-site project management upgrades to the system based upon recommendations from the water management audit process.
- Review and guide the work of subcontractors on assigned projects.
- Become familiar with irrigation/water clients to support optimizing their systems and water management practices.
- Duties may include field visits to collect data, recommend modifications to irrigation system settings, remote monitoring and programming, etc.
- Remote Monitoring: daily water management monitoring of multiple sites utilizing central controls.
- CAD: assist our CAD designer(s) with factual project site data.
- Training: develop training models and conduct training for our clients.
- Project construction management oversight services will be required, as needed.
- Work with local municipalities to understand regulations and compliance.
- Promote revenue opportunities to Davey through regulatory monitoring and reporting water usage.
- Track water use and submit government reports for clients as needed.
- Interact with Davey clients in alignment with Davey regional leadership to position Davey as a capable water management service option.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities Continued:
- Collaborate with Davey Service Lines to support a OneDavey approach.
- Support the development of education and training initiatives in close collaboration with the water management team and E&T group within the Davey Institute.
- This may include hands-on field training, regional workshops, and national programs.
- Formats could be one-to-one fieldwork, presentations, training, video calls.
- Teach Davey Water Management principles from the horticultural plant-soil-water continuum perspective.
- This may include hands-on field training, regional workshops, and national programs.
- Train future auditors and team members
Qualification/Requirements:
Education And/or Experience:
- Horticulturally based knowledge
- Strong belief in the pursuit of continuous education.
- National certifications CLA, CIC, and or CID through the International Irrigation Association
Length/Kind of Experience:
- Experience in working throughout the entire landscape environment including pumphouse systems, irrigation system controllers, programming, soils, and plant care
Performance Skills:
- Create and read work orders.
- Explain instructions to crew members and/or subcontractors.
- Complete written inspection reports.
- Stoop, stand, walk, kneel, and bend for multiple hours per day.
- Dig, lift, and move earth from around in-ground irrigation components.
- Travel regularly both locally and nationally, as needed.
Qualification/Requirements Continued:
Technical Skills:
- Basic competency with Microsoft Office (particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Must be able to operate a trencher, remote controller programs, multi-meter, and wire locater.
- Basic understanding of hydraulics and electrical irrigation components.
- Must have a valid driver license.
- Navigation of irrigation operational software, smart controllers and pumphouse monitoring programs.
Knowledge Skills:
- Knowledge and understanding of the horticultural environment.
- Basic math, including measurements, pipe sizing, and volume calculations.
- How plant and soil systems interrelate.
- Backflow and pump operation.
Abilities:
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with clients, subcontractors, and Davey employees.
- Tailor terminology to an acceptable level for others is essential for effective communication.
- Problem solving, troubleshooting, and supervisory skills.
This position requires regular overnight travel within the southwest region of the United States, with occasional travel nationally to Davey’s corporate headquarters in Kent, OH or elsewhere as needed.
