Position Overview
The UAM Senior Utility Designer is responsible for planning, designing, verifying locations, inspecting, or otherwise capturing information related to utility and telecommunication assets. This is a senior-level position. Work assignments involve applying complex procedures and developing new procedures to solve complicated problems. Additionally, this position performs quality checks on others' work. This role provides our utility clients with the services and solutions needed to manage their assets efficiently and effectively by performing the duties described. This position is an individual contributor role while also serving as a mentor and subject matter expert to others. This position is in an office and/or in a remote setting.
Job Duties
● Utilize various software platforms to analyze and interpret field data.*
● Identify and keep record of existing telecommunication and electric utility infrastructure and equipment.*
● Recognize unacceptable safety risk conditions and hazards related to the work environment, federal standards, and client specifications.*
● Apply engineering principles and compliance standards to complete the design of aerial and underground utility facilities including: remedying any National Electric Safety Code violations, performing pole loading analysis, and incorporating utility specific standards and specifications.*
● Ensure designs are the most cost-effective solution, while maintaining aforementioned safety and compliance standards.*
● Transpose the design solution to other software platforms specifically: utilize various CAD programs to complete a 2-D design print, utilize various CU/MU (Compatible/Macro Unit) programs to complete a design estimate, complete cost causation analysis and assign a percentage of incurred construction cost to any involved parties, as outlined by the utility specific specifications, utilize various notification programs to communicate the design work being completed to other involved parties.*
● Pursue permitting for any part of the design solution that requires it.*
● Review and/or correct data errors within the utility’s database and systems.*
● Understand the contractual needs and specifications of clients and their customers and develop appropriate solutions to suit those needs and specifications.*
● Communicate with the client to ensure that design directives are correct and up to date.*
● Resolve any unforeseen issues that can be corrected at the design phase.*
● Complete design revisions to resolve construction issues.*
● Review and interpret manuals, construction standards, design prints, and other technical schemas as necessary.*
● Collaborate with others (project managers, supervisors, engineers, other designers, technicians, and administrators) to propose the best infrastructure design solutions.
● Plan and execute daily (self and team) work requirements and goals while meeting quality, time, and budget constraints.
● Perform Quality Audit/Quality Control (QA/QC) reviews of other Utility Designers.
● Inquire, observe, and investigate to help identify challenges and/or improve process efficiencies.
● Ensure the proper care and maintenance of any vehicle and equipment assigned including regular inspections, maintenance checks, and prompt reporting of any issues to the appropriate supervisor or maintenance personnel.
● Understand and execute proper use of document management systems, proper filing, and document import/export.
● React safely and appropriately in emergency situations.
● Report and respond timely and accurately to the supervisor.
● Participate in employee and professional training events as assigned.
● Travel (10-20%) for on-site job duty training, projects, or meetings.
● Perform other related duties as assigned.
● Follow all company policies, procedures, and work rules.
Qualifications
Required:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Willingness to obtain and maintain professional certificates and licenses as required.
• Proficiency in basic office applications and data entry; willingness to learn utility design software.
• Ability to read, comprehend, and draft professional correspondence.
• Effective communication skills in both one-on-one and group settings.
• Basic arithmetic proficiency.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions, solve problems, and address varied situations.
Preferred:
• Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in engineering or related technical field.
• Prior experience in the electric utility or telecommunications industry.
• Knowledge of electric hazard identification, equipment identification, or communication equipment.
• Familiarity with Outside Plant Engineering design and pole loading analysis software.
