Position Overview
Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc., a Davey company, is seeking a full-time, mid-level Project Scientist to join the Hazmat Team in our Richmond, Virginia office. This position is ideal for an experienced environmental professional who is detail-oriented, self-motivated, and capable of managing multiple projects while providing technical expertise and client support in a collaborative consulting environment.
Job Duties
The successful candidate will support and manage a variety of environmental compliance and hazardous materials projects, performing both field and office-based assignments with increasing levels of responsibility and independence. Project work may involve a range of environmental subject areas, including:
- Asbestos and Lead Based Paint (LBP)
- Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs)
- Stormwater permitting and monitoring
- Aboveground and underground storage tanks (ASTs/USTs)
- Waste characterization and management
- Water quality permitting and monitoring
- Air permit compliance
- Essential Job Functions
Responsibilities will include field activities (e.g., site visits, sampling, inspections) utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety vests, gloves, steel- toed boots, and eye protection. Certain assignments may also require the use of half-face or full-face respirators. Additional responsibilities will include task management, analysis and interpretation of laboratory results and field-collected data, report preparation, and collaboration with project managers and team members. The ability to effectively manage multiple project assignments and deadlines while demonstrating strong oral and written communication skills is essential.
Primary activities will include conducting Phase I and Phase II ESAs; conducting soil, groundwater, air, wastewater, drinking water, and surface water sampling; conducting asbestos, LBP, and hazardous materials surveys; performing multi-media environmental compliance assessments; and preparing technical reports under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Professional.
Candidates will be expected to possess or obtain asbestos and lead paint inspector certifications within six (6) months of employment.
Project meetings, fieldwork, site visits, and professional development assignments will routinely require overnight travel throughout the region. This position is expected to consist of approximately 60% office work and 40% field work.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience with data collection, presentation, and evaluation. Candidate should demonstrate the ability to prepare documents that are technically and grammatically correct and fully referenced
- Ability to take initiative and resolve problems with a team building mentality
- Ability to develop and maintain interpersonal relationships with WSSI personnel at all levels
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license and ability to operate company vehicles
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in Science (e.g., Geology, Hydrogeology, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental, etc.), Environmental Engineering, similar engineering discipline, or other closely related field
- At least four years of relevant experience
- Experience working with a team to plan and balance the workload of multiple projects or assignments
- Experience in assisting with proposal support and development
- HAZWOPER certification or similar vocational certifications and skill sets
- Good working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Power Point, mapping (GIS, CAD, or similar software) experience is a plus
