Position Overview

Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc. (WSSI) is looking for an entry-level to mid-level Consulting Arborist/Urban Forester to join our urban forestry team.

Job Duties

  • Perform tree inventories
  • Perform tree assessments using various methodologies including those outlined by the Guide for Plant Appraisal published by Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers (CTLA) and International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ)
  • Prepare arborist reports, tree preservation/conservation plans, specifications, and details 
  • Review civil, architectural, and landscape architecture plans, details, and specifications for conflicts with trees 
  • Occasionally assist with urban forestry projects based in other WSSI offices (such as Maryland, other areas of Virginia, or beyond). 
  • Assist other departments with various tasks as needed, such as wetland delineation, vegetation monitoring, surveying, GPS mapping, and archeology.  

Qualifications

Required: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry, urban forestry, or related field (SAF accredited degree preferred) 
  • Familiarity with forestry, urban forestry, landscape construction, landscape architecture, or site design and construction 
  • Knowledge of arboriculture; tree preservation; tree root patterns and morphology; and forest and landscape plant identification, including native and non-native trees and shrubs 
  • Understanding of the ecology of the Mid-Atlantic including native and non-native species 
  • Aptitude for accurate tree identification  
  • Interest in working both indoors and outdoors in varying terrain and weather 
  • Ability to work closely with design and construction management teams and local government 
  • Willingness for occasional regional/national travel, sometimes for up to 2-3 weeks at a time 
  • ISA Certified Arborist or the ability to obtain within three months 
  • ISA TRAQ or the ability to obtain within one year  
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and the ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines under limited supervision  
  • Ability to interpret and apply municipal tree regulations in a variety of jurisdictions.

Preferred: 

  • Familiarity with civil engineering; land clearing; site work; residential, commercial, and institutional construction and renovations; landscape design/construction; underground utilities construction and design 
  • Ability to work well with regulators and regulatory agencies 
  • Willingness to work with a diverse client base in both the public and private sectors 
  • Technological aptitude and ability to quickly learn unfamiliar software and technology 
  • GIS and/or CAD experience (or willingness/aptitude to learn) 
  • Experience with GPS and/or survey concepts
